Using Social Media with Students
Background for my idea:
I am doing one of Adobe’s Education Exchange classes. This one is on Photoshop. We had a guest speaker this week, Mr. Needles, a graphics teacher on Long Island. He has his students take pictures, post them to Instagram, and use Photoshop to turn them into more elegant works of art. My focus is on getting students to see science in their daily lives so I will be tweaking this idea. I just can’t take credit for having the original idea of having kids share on Instagram. I wanted kids to do this project years ago, before Instagram existed, so maybe I would have come up with that component on my own after all.
Main idea:
Students photograph where they see science in their daily lives. If they do not have a digital camera or access to one, I may be able to send them a $10 digital camera because I bought a few to use in my classroom years ago. I am still hoping to do my lessons with virtual students, so I am not going to assume I will have synchronous interactions with them. For this assignment, I will schedule synchronous meetings to discuss our findings.
Social Networking Resources and how they will be used:
Instagram- Where students will post their image; identify what the science component is in writing. Students can use the hashtag, #stemcarte, when they post. While I have an Instagram account, I don't have one yet that isolates my stuff from someone else. I looked at how Mr Needles has his set up and I think in theory I can have students send their pics to stemcarte, because that is now my name. I originally used getzedtech to sign up at Instagram, but they let me change it without any hassle. Mr. Needles has an account with Iconosquare so I followed his link and it let me connect my Instagram account with Iconosquare.

I just had to put up both Iconosquare screenshots because as soon as I changed my name at Instagram to stemcarte, it automatically changed at iconosquare. What can I say? It apparently does not take much to impress me :-).
Twitter- Where students will announce to classmates they have uploaded an image using #stemcarte or @stemcarte.
I created a new Twitter name, as suggested by AcademHack.

Kidblog- Where students will post a link to their image or post the image again. Here they will explain why they chose what they chose to photograph as a representation of science in their daily lives
Google HangOut- a place where we can have synchronous discussions to talk about what similarities we are noticing among the class’s images. How has their impression of science in their daily lives changed by doing this project? (Question will also be answered in a KidBlog forum.)
Connection to Experts:
I am having a hard time figuring this part out. Do I ask students to tweet to a photographer? Do I ask students to attend a Tweet-chat and interact there? Who are the experts I want my students to bother? This is always one place I have apprehension because I really don't like having students approach adults who have not established themselves as wanting to be bothered. I did a search to see if there are places students can go online to bother people who appreciate science and / or photography, and the closest I have come to it are these Tweet chats:
#ScienceChat We assemble a team of experts in various fields to discuss innovations in science, research and scientific collaboration.@Javier_Noris Wednesday6:00 - 7:00 PM ET
#photochat: Chat about photography. Takes place Thursdays 1-2pm ET. Moderator: @patdepuy for more info. (tags: photography)
